USDT Domain Registration FAQ
This FAQ addresses the most common questions from domain holders about using USDT (Tether) to register domain names. For comprehensive coverage, see the Buying Domains with USDT guide.
Payment Process
How does USDT domain payment work?
When you select cryptocurrency payment at checkout, the registrar redirects you to a payment gateway (e.g., BitPay). The gateway generates an invoice with a unique USDT wallet address and the exact amount in USDT. You send USDT from your wallet to this address. The gateway confirms the on-chain transaction, converts USDT to fiat, and remits payment to the registrar.
Which USDT network should I use: ERC-20 or TRC-20?
Use the network specified by the payment gateway. Sending USDT on the wrong network (e.g., sending TRC-20 USDT to an ERC-20 address) may result in permanent fund loss. TRC-20 transactions are faster and cheaper but are only valid if the gateway specifies a TRC-20 address.
KYC and Identity
Does USDT payment eliminate KYC requirements?
No. ICANN-accredited registrars must collect and verify registrant contact information per the Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA), regardless of payment method. WHOIS privacy services can mask your data from public view but do not eliminate the registrar’s data collection obligation.
Refunds and Disputes
What happens with USDT refunds?
USDT refunds are processed at the exchange rate at the time of refund, not at the time of original payment. The refund amount in USDT may differ from the original payment amount. Additionally, refunds must be processed through the same payment gateway, which may impose its own processing timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy a domain directly with USDT on-chain?
No mainstream ICANN-accredited registrar accepts direct on-chain USDT transfers. Domain holders must use third-party payment gateways such as BitPay or CoinPayments that convert USDT to fiat.
Does paying with USDT bypass KYC requirements?
No. ICANN-accredited registrars must comply with identity verification requirements regardless of payment method. USDT payment changes the payment channel, not the KYC obligation.
What happens if my USDT payment times out?
The payment gateway will cancel the invoice and the USDT will remain in your wallet (minus any network fee if a transaction was broadcast). You must restart the payment process with a new invoice.
Can I get a refund if I pay with USDT?
Refunds are possible but the USDT amount returned depends on the exchange rate at the time of refund, not at the time of original payment. This means you may receive more or fewer USDT than you originally sent.
